Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS)
We have three family values by which we live:
- Positive Behavior
- Consistent Attendance
- Excellent Achievement
- Behavior at School
- Playground Expectations
- Cafeteria Expectations
- Romero Academy School-Wide Discipline Steps
- Bella's Family Values
Behavior at School
School is a special place for children. It is our wish to make every child feel valued, to develop good relationships with peers and staff members, to use self-control, and to experience success.
Our primary objective is to create an environment where all students can learn and teachers can teach.
Periodically, throughout the course of the school year, classroom teachers will review the school rules. Students who demonstrate a consistent disregard of the rules will be sent to either the Principal, Assistant Principal, or Student Culture Interventionist. The administrators will follow state statute, District Six policy and our school-wide discipline steps
Please share with your child the expectation that school is a place to learn and that there will be consequences for inappropriate behavior at school.
Playground Expectations
Boundaries: Students can play inside the sidewalk boundaries on the blacktop and playground equipment. Students can play in the grass within the burned grass boundary lines.
Slides: Students may only slide down, on their bottoms, one at a time.
Swings: Students swing front to back only.
Monkey Bars: Go across one at a time.
Sandbox: All sand stays on the ground or in the buckets.
Balls: Students may kick/play catch on grass only unless playing basketball.
Jump Ropes: Jump ropes are used for jumping only.
1st Offense | Reteach appropriate behaviors, and give a 2 minute time-out on the bench. |
---|---|
2nd Offense (related or unrelated) | Reteach appropriate behaviors with a 5 minute time-out on the bench. |
3rd Offense | Level 1 referral. |
Cafeteria Expectations
Since we would like this to be an enjoyable place, we expect students to treat the cafeteria as they would a restuarant. In order to ensure an enjoyable eating experience for all, the following are cafeteria expectations.
While in the cafeteria, students will:
- Stand in line with hands and feet to themselves.
- Walk in the hallway cafeteria.
- Talk only to the people at their table.
- Use "quiet voices" when talking to students at their table.
- Use "excellent" table manners.
- Gross words, noises, or inappropriate actions will not be tolerated.
- Get permission and a pass before using the restroom.
- Clean-up after themselves.
- Do not bring soda pop.
- Do not bring glass conters to school.
Bella's Family Values: Cafeteria Behavior
- Wait your turn in line.
- Use your classroom voice.
- Clean up the area around you.
Romero Academy School-Wide Discipline Steps
If a student misbehaves in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, playground, or anywhere on the school campus, teachers may take one of the following actions. Based on the severity of the behavior, the staff may use their discretion to not follow the progress.
Step 1: | Verbal warning by the adult. Students need to get back on track. |
---|---|
Step 2: | Students who do not get back on track after the verbal warning will be given additional consequences by the adult who issues the Step 2 consequence, with the aim of getting the student back on track. |
Step 3: | Reflection form. Students who are continuing the inappropriate behavior after Step 1 and Step 2 will need to fill out a refocus form. There will be one for primary and one for intermediate. |
Step 4: | Students who move through each of the above steps and continue their inappropriate behaviors will receive a Level 1 referral by the adult. The same adult will make a phone call home to the parents to let them know about the behaviors. Depending on the severity, the student may earn an in or out of school suspension. |
In addition to the previously mentioned steps, students that earn in school suspension or out of school suspension will also be suspended from engagement in social activities. The length of the "social" suspension will be based on the severity of their actions. A social suspension entails that a student must leave school grounds after the bell and may not attend any after school social activity (dance, athletic event). The typical duration of a social suspension for a student that earned any form of Out of School Suspension is one Quarter (i.e. one 9-week period).
