School Closures and Delayed Starts

Unless the weather is extremely inclement, students will remain outside until school begins. If for medical reasons your child must stay inside, please send a note from your doctor. During severe weather we will have the children enter the building to remain in the gym until the first bell rings for school to begin.

When District 6 decides to delay the opening of school or cancel a school day, the decision will be made with the safety of our students in mind. The decision will be made by 6:30 a.m. Listen for school announcements on KFKA 1310 AM, KVVS 1170 AM, KGRE 1450 AM, and KUAD 99.1 FM. The Denver television stations will have information if school will be closed. There will also be a recording on the school phone (348-1400 or 348-2500) or check the main District 6 website (www.greeleyschools.org). 

Inclement weather or emergencies may result in closing schools, delayed opening, or early dismissal. If you do not have a person listed on your database as being permitted to pick up your child, we will not release your child to them. Please make sure your database is updated when phone numbers, contacts, and emergency contacts change.

 If schools are closed for the day because of bad weather or quarantines related to contagious diseases such as COVID-19, students will remain home. Generally, this also means that all other school activities, such as after-school clubs, sports, practices, etc. are also canceled for that day. The lost instructional time may need to be made up later in the year in order to meet the State of Colorado's minimum requirements for annual instructional time for students.

If schools will open on a two-hour delayed start, then students should arrive at school two hours later than their normal start times. A delayed start could be used if weather or road conditions are severe overnight but expected to improve in the morning. On a delayed-start day, school buses will run their routes two hours later than normal. Parents who drive their children to school should drop their children off two hours later than the normal time.

In the event of a district or school emergency, District 6 will either call, send text messages, email, send a mobile app notificaiton, or all of the above. 

If schools are to be closed or put on a two-hour delayed start because of poor weather and road      conditions, then that decision will be announced by these means:

• A posting on the district's main WEBSITE 
• Postings to the district's social media sites: TWITTER and FACEBOOK 
•  A recorded message on the district's main telephone number: 970-348-6000 
• Notification to local and metro-Denver area radio and television stations

• Parents are encouraged to pay attention to the Colorado weather forecasted for our are. 
• Please monitor the type of outwear that your child wears to school. Make sure that is appropriate for the weather forecasted for that day. 
• It is helpful if you label your child's clothing by writing their first and last name somewhere on the inside of the coat and jacket. 

Weather and temperature changes in Colorado can often be very difficult to predict. It can be very cold in the morning when your child leaves for school, but often by lunch time, the temperature will have completely changed. The higher elevation, clear skies, and wind can quickly affect our perception of how warm or cold it might feel outside. 

15 Degrees Farenheit

When the temperature reading is 15 degrees or above, the school will consider if it is appropriate for the children to play outside for recess. 

Other factors such as wind chill and precipitation will be considered by the building principal/assistant principal when making the decision on whether to go outside or remain inside. 

In the event of inclement weather, such as temperature below 15 degrees Fahrenheit, heavy snow, sleet, etc., children will come inside upon arrival at school and/or stay inside at lunch-recess.
